As part of a “survival strategy”, Denmark’s fisheries will move toward Marine Stewardship Council(MSC) eco-label assessments, the Danish Fishermen’s Association told the Fishing News International newsletter, adding that the industrial sandeel fishery will be the next in line for pre-assessment.
The association’s Jesper Larsen told the newsletter that the industry was “going down this route to survive. We have to prove we can fish responsibly.” Larsen noted that there is an increasing public awareness of the “chain of production,” which means the industrial fishing sector will have to look to eco-labelling.
The sandeel fishery’s planned assessment is in response to increasing demand from the aquaculture industry for sustainably-sourced fish feed, the Fishing News International reported.
