NGO strategies considered at Stockholm workshop

Published on June 4, 2009

The Natura 2000 project, the upcoming EU control regulation, and the futures of the Baltic salmon and the Common Fisheries Policy, respectively, were the issues handled at an intensive two-day NGO “strategic workshop” in Stockholm in early June.

The workshop, a part of the joint Eko-Unia/Our Earth Foundation/FISH project “The Baltic is in Poland; The Baltic is in Europe”, had a threefold purpose:

  1. To provide information about and good examples of marine Natura 2000 sites
  2. To formulate a strategy for the rest of the year in relation to the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, the proposal for a new Control Regulation and the new long-term management plan for Baltic salmon
  3. To contribute to greater cooperation between different NGOs in the Baltic region, as well as facilitate a sharing of ideas.

More than 20 representatives from Poland, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Denmark and Great Britain took part; presentations made may be studied via links below.
