US angels on, despite economic sinkers

Published on June 11, 2009

With nearly 40 million practitioners, angling remains one of Americaโ€™s dominating outdoor recreational activities, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) reports.

US Anglers generate over $45 billion annually in retail sales with a $125 billion impact on the nationโ€™s economy, creating employment for more than one million people, a press release from ASA, a trade association, says.

Not surprisingly, Florida of Hemingway fame leads state involvement with 2.77 million anglers, followed by oil-rigged Texas (2.52) and long-coasted California (1.73 million).
