In July, when fish consumption soars on the Polish coast, Klub Gaja organized a series of consumer targeted, awareness raising street performances titled “The history of the Golden Fish”.
Also dubbed as ‘happenings’ by Klub Gaja, the theatrical street performances in three coastal towns – Miedzyzdroje, Kolobrzeg and Hel – targeted fish consumers and aimed at increasing awareness about current overfishing practices and their potential fatal consequences on some Baltic Sea fish species, such as cod. Current destructive fishing practices in Poland may lead to depleted fish resources and disturbed marine ecosystems if current practices persist, considering both, the industry and consumer choices.
Consumers naturally influence which types of fish are supplied by the industry, and another campaign organized by Klub Gaja targeted precisely this issue in July and August. ‘Fish have a voice’ presented a series of social educational radio shows, lead by Ewa Podolska of TOK FM, dedicated to raising awareness on issues of sustainable development, environmental protection, endangered fish species and consumer choices.
In addition, Klub Gaja collaborated with the Hel Marine Station, under the hospices of Professor Krzysztof Skora and Iwona Kuklik, to host an exhibit on endangered fish species and sustainble development.
All three campaigns have been successfully received and reached thousands of people. Klub Gaja is currently planning many other projects, equally creative and effective as those delivered in Poland this summer.
