WWF protests possible weakening of Control Proposal

Published on September 30, 2009

The proposed EU Control Regulation, still subject to last-minute debate and last-second changes, has led the WWF to issue an angry letter to both ministers and attachés.

The World Wide Fund for Nature says some of the most important control priorities are now running the risk of being scrapped from the final proposal, which the Swedish EU Presidency still plans to present for a vote in the Council on October 19-20.

Specifically article 95, the suspension of financial aid when Member States do not comply with the rules, has been targeted by France, according to WWF, adding that France is now trying hard to raise other Member States to follow suite in the COREPER meeting on October 7.

COREPER is a congregation of the 27 states’ Permanent Representatives, either the Ambassador or the second-in-command at the EU Embassy in Brussels, and acts as an intermediary between the working group and the Council.
