Nordic Parliamentarians dissing discards

Published on November 4, 2009

The European Union should do more to prevent discards in fisheries, a statement from a Nordic Council committee says.

The Nordic Council is an inter-parliamentary body for Sweden. Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, and its Environment and Natural Resources Committee will later submit its view on the upcoming reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), this in response to the Commission’s Green Paper published this spring.

The Committee statement said it will provide the EU with information about successful Nordic models, e.g. fixing the number of fishing days per boat, closed fishing areas and more effective throwback regulations.

Sweden, Denmark and Finland are EU members, while Norway and Iceland, two major fishing powers, are not.
