MSC best in test

Published on January 20, 2010

Despite a recent storm of criticism from environmentalists and scientists, the WWF has found the MSC label better than any other certification system.

The Marine Stewardship Council eco-labelling process has recently been questioned for its use of commercial consultants, paid by the industry.

The study, commissioned by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), compared seven certification systems for fish caught wild, and the MSC label was found to live up to 95 percent of the demands set up, based on best practice methods defined by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and others.

Other eco-labelling systems, including Natureland, Friends of the Sea, and the Swedish KRAV label, fared much worse in the study, filling only 26-65 of the criteria set up.  Those organisations were found to lack in both stated means to attain sustainable fisheries and in transparency.
