Danish scientist Poul Degnbol has been presented with the WWF Baltic Leadership Award in 2010 for his “endeavours to achieve sustainable fisheries within the frame of the EU Common Fisheries Policy”.

Degnbol, who is Head of Advisory Programme at the Copenhagen-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), said in a press release from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that he was happy that his work for sustainable fisheries was given attention and that “hopefully, in later years our understanding that we have to work seriously for sustainable management has increased. That’s a condition for both the fish and for the sector to have s future”.

Earlier winners of the award include Finland’s president Tarja Halonen, and, in 2009, Finland’s foreign minister Alexander Stubb, for being instrumental in the launching of the EU Baltic Strategy while a member of the EU Parliament.
