On 12 August, after a long process, the European Commission finally tabled the anticipated proposal for a new management plan for the Baltic salmon.
The main objectives of the plan are to ensure that the Baltic salmon stock is exploited in a sustainable manner which follows the principle of Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), and to safeguard the genetic integrity and diversity of the Baltic salmon stock.
The proposal may be discussed on 7 September at the next European Council fisheries working group meeting, although according to information obtained from Swedish government officials, the plan is not likely to be debated at the European Council meeting before the end of 2011. The plan can enter into force only after it has been approved by both, the European Council and the European Parliament.
