Race for the Baltic campaign launches

Published on June 7, 2013

Tomorrow, the launch of the Race for the Baltic campaign, initiated by FISH, Coalition Clean Baltic and Oceana, will take place in Malmรถ, Sweden to coincide with World Oceans Day.

The Race for the Baltic campaign will feature a bicycle tour of the nine countries surrounding the Baltic Sea and we will be gathering support over the summer of 2013, which will culminate in the handover of a Call for Action to our Ministers of Environment in Copenhagen on 3 October in connection with the HELCOM Ministerial meeting.

Our objective in the short term is to ensure that politicians at the HELCOM Ministerial meeting in October take action to fulfil the obligations that have been agreed upon to address the pressing environmental issues in the Baltic Sea. We believe that the Baltic Sea region can become a model for management and protection of the marine environment across the EU and globally.

We will be gathering signatures over the course of the summer and these will be delivered to the regionโ€™s Environment Ministers when they will be discussing the future health of the Baltic Sea in October.

The governmental targets and objectives have already been agreed upon, what we now need is for governmentโ€™s across the region to take action.
