The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has released a new short guide to fish stock assessment.
In this new dummy guide ICES explains how they use fish data collected from landings at ports, fishers and research vessels surveys to estimate the size of commercial fish populations to be able to give advice to governments and international commissions on how to exploit fish populations sustainable.
ICES is one of the two main bodies, together with The Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), the European Commission turns to for scientific advice when setting Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for European waters.
