The RISE UP – Blue Call to Action is a joint call by Indigenous Peoples and Fisherfolk groups, Ocean advocacy organisations and philanthropies to governments and corporations to join and take bold action to safeguard the ocean at the next UN Ocean Conference (which has been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic).
Why do we need a Blue Call to Action?
The ocean is in deep crisis. Coral reef die-offs, collapsing fish populations and species extinctions are evidence of this escalating crisis brought about by overfishing, ocean heating, acidification, pollution and multiple other stressors. Defending the ocean’s capacity to produce oxygen, sequester carbon and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people is vital. However, the international political response has so far not come anywhere near what is needed to avert this ocean crisis.
Some other organizations that are involved and have endorsed the initiative are;
International Collective in Support of Fishworkers, Oceana, Oak Foundation, Seas at Risk, Prince Albert I of Monaco Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, WWF, World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers, Waitt Institute.
