Baltic Sea Advisory Council calls for the creation of a taskforce to work on the recovery of the collapsed eastern Baltic cod

The Baltic Sea Advisory Council (BSAC), a publicly funded body providing advice on fisheries to the European Commission, has made a statement concerning the need for responsible fisheries management and the negative situation for eastern Baltic cod. The cod fishery has been closed since July 2019 and due to slow population recovery will likely remain so for several years to come.

Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic BALTFISH has developed a common set of proposals that will increase the funds available to the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Meeting between NGOs and Finnish EU Presidency officials re December Council

The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and the Fisheries Secretariat invited the European campaign directors of The Pew Trusts (Mr Andrew Clayton) and Oceana (Mr Javier Lopez) to come to Helsinki to meet with Mr Risto Lampinen the Director of Fisheries and with Mr Teppo Säkkinen special advisor to Minister Leppä to discuss their concerns about overfishing in the North East Atlantic and North Sea and the total fish catch levels which are due to be decided in the EU Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels on 16-17 December 2019.

Sweden wants to tighten fisheries controls

Joint NGO priorities on the revision of the EU Fisheries Control System

A broad coalition of NGOs have together drawn up a series of recommendations based on the EU Commission proposal for the revision of the Fisheries Control System, this includes both an analysis of the proposal as well as a detailed 12 point plan for reform.
